In 2013, La Bufón S.O.S.ial was invited by the Maya Research Program (MRP) to return and participate in a program to recover identities through the arts with children, youth and the community. Yaxunah is a strategic archaeological site that serves as an important model for other communities. La Bufón S.O.S.ial is supporting the work of needs planning to strengthen language skills, cultural identity and help young people and children recover from the effects of colonization and war, protect natural resources and recover knowledge about traditional and medicinal plants.
This year 3 artist will return to work with the Yaxunah theater company "Mayalenials" in a project of the day of the dead (hanal pixan) called "The food of my grandmothers" A work of hybrid puppets that emerged through one of the community legends about this special date in Mexico; children and youth are inspired to create their own show in their Mayan language and be able to present it in their nearby communities, and most importantly, reactivate its pyramids as a cultural center located two kilometers from their homes.
We have made 4 peace camps in Yaxunah and it is the first community where two young Mayans left their village after almost 7 years of training to make an artistic residency with La Bufón S.O.Sial in the writer's international house in Bacalar Mexico. We have undoubtedly inspired and empowered these young artists to create their own productions and reinforce their identity through theater and art. Today they ask us for support to materialize an idea that was born a year ago with the visit of two master puppets Danae Brisonnette and Carolina Pimentel who gave them the tools and professional skills to do international quality work, the company "Mayalenials" want to produce and travel with their work to their surrounding communities and several indigenous language festivals representing their community and doing what they like the most as they say...Mayan art.
We want to ask for your support and be able to fulfill the dream of modern Mayas with ancestral knowledge in their blood that are ready to show the world how theater is done in Maya.
